Jim Valentino's SHADOWHAWK from Image Comics. One of my favorite superheroes of my youth. And now that I'm an older, grizzled comic artist, I am aware of his "indy" status amongst super heroes. But it's funny, a LOT of kids from my age group were into Shadowhawk.
Me and my two best friends at the time would be at the park, playing Shadowhawk and practicing jumping off stuff, landing in his signature pose. It was RAD!
I can say without a doubt, that Shadowhawk was a big inspiration on Sharknife. (they both have the same first 3 letters in their names!)
Which is why it's funny these days, Shadowhawk seems pretty downplayed. I've met Jim Valentino a couple times and told him how much I like Shadowhawk and he just kinda snickers. That's a shame! A lotta dudes love S-HAWK, man!
Sure he's kinda just a batman / wolverine hybrid... But that's fine, too. Those are 2 good character to mix. And Shadowhawk is definitely cooler than that AMALGAM dude whatever his name was. DARK CLAW or whatever.
And then later Shadowhawk turned out to be black. I loved that moment. I had the goddamn AUDIO COMIC CD whatever for it, signed by Valentino of course (my first SDCC. 1994). Listened to that shit a lot. It's all about the part where Shadowhawk reveals he's black, fighting the white supremecist HAWK'S SHADOW. That was some serious shit!
Now I hear Shadowhawk is like a "spirit of justice" that floats into different people or something? I think that's actually pretty cool, too! That's like M.Bison from Street Fighter, except M.Bison was manifested PSYCHO POWER.
So yeah, I like Shadowhawk. I could easily see myself drawing a Shadowhawk comic.
cool!!!
i was into Jim Lee at the time. and Rob Liefeld. oh yes, i loved Rob!
